BEGINNING DRAWING FOR WOODCARVERS; AND
HOW TO FINISH YOUR CARVING
These 2 Seminars are excellent classes for beginning carvers (or perhaps intermediate and advance carvers as well!)
BEGINNING DRAWING FOR WOODCARVERS (Non-Carving Seminar)
For many, Woodcarvers’ journey to woodcarving started with the love of drawing and whittling that drawing into a 3-dimensional wooden object.  For others, they cannot even draw a straight line but they sure can carve one!  In this 1-day class on Sat, we will learn some basic drawing techniques that will help you with your carving.  Learn how to draw what you see; what pencils work best on wood, how to draw your own patterns and create a carving that is unique to you!  Individual attention will be given to each student. All supplies included.
HOW TO FINISH YOUR CARVING (Non-Carving Seminar)
You’ve finished your carving, now what? Many people are intimidated with finishing their carvings and have lots of carvings that need painting or staining sitting on a shelf. Perhaps you have asked yourself:  Do I pre-treat my carving before painting or staining?  What kind of medium should I use to paint my carving?  What is gouache and why would I use it on my carving?  Am I using the right products to keep my carving from fading and preserving it for years to come?  I am having trouble mixing colors, why?   I will answer all those questions and more in this lecture-style one day class on Sunday.  There are a wide variety of ways to finish a carving, but learning some of the key principles will help you to make sure you are doing right by that carving you are so proud of.  I will be bringing many products for you to try on wood samples to help you choose the right way to finish your project.  I can help you choose what product is best to finish your carving, if you want to bring along a piece to discuss.  All demo supplies will be provided.

Wanda Richert

BLACK CRAPPIE FISH
Wanda will teach a 3-day Seminar Monday through Wednesday to all levels of carvers.  Students will carve an 8 1/2-inch Black Crappie fish.  The fish will be carved using power tools; however, students may carve the project by hand if they so choose After the fish is carved, Wanda will then teach students how to wood burn, paint and mount the fish.  Students may bring their own habitat or purchase one from Wanda.  You can order one from Wanda ahead by calling or emailing her.  Bring power tools and bits, or your hand tools if you choose to carve the fish by hand.  If the student uses power tools to compete this project, they must bring a dust collector.  As this project does require woodburning, students are asked to bring their wood burners and a XL fish tip to class.  The XL fish tip is not handled by all vendors, so Wanda will have some for sale.  If you do not have a wood burner, let Wanda know, as she may have one you can borrow.  Students are also asked to bring sanding tools and paint brushes to class.  Students may call Wanda at 903 821-2432 or e-mail her at safecarvingwanda@gmail.com with questions.
NOTE:  Due to health concerns, a dust collector MUST BE USED for any power carving or extended manual sanding.

WOLTERSTORFF, LARRY (New Instructor to TWG)
CARVING FINE FINISHED CANE (Multiple types of wood to select from)
Larry WolterstorffWe are happy to have Larry Wolterstorff, from Prescott, AZ with us this year at TWG!  Larry will be teaching five 1-day Seminars (Monday through Friday) on how to carve a fine finished cane that you or someone you love will prize for years to come.  Larry has spent years perfecting his techniques on carving and assembling canes.  He will assist students in selecting a stick, a pattern, tip and handle for their cane.  Larry will then teach the student how to carve it, assemble it, and apply the finish on it.  He uses a variety of different types of wood, such as Basswood, Black Walnut, Myrtle (from Oregon), Poplar, figured Maple, some Burls, and Cherry.  In some cases, he uses some exotic woods, such as Zebra, Wenge, Spalted Tamerind, Mable and Granadillo.  Some of these woods are hard to obtain, so Larry suggest you contact him shortly after you sign up for his class and let him know what you want, so he can attempt to have it on hand for you.

The Instructor recommends that you take 2 to 5 days to complete the whole project, depending on your level of carving skills.  However, all levels of skill are welcome, beginner to advanced.   He only takes 6 students in each Seminar, so that he can devote ample time with each student.  So, sign up fast to get in Larry’s Seminars.  Take as many days as you like!  There may be some woodburning used in the project, so students are asked to please bring your woodburner.  If you do not have a woodburner, contact Larry as he may have one you can borrow.

A little something about LarryHe has been carving for over 30 years and has made over 300 canes in the last 20 years.  He has been published in Wood Carving Ill., Issue 51; Summer 2010 (Magic Toy).  Larry’s goal in teaching is to make his classes informative and fun, as well as resulting in a completed cane that students are proud of forever!  Larry will keep you entertained through out the classes; that is for sure!
