RATH, LANCE                            CARVE A PEEK-A-BOO JAY CARICATURE
Pat MooreLance Rath completed his first carving as a young boy, working alone from instructions he found in a magazine. His childish hand showed in the work, but it was good enough for his mother to keep it for him to find years later after she passed. As a boy scout, he carved neckerchief rings and sold them to earn the money he needed to go to summer camp.  He laid down his knife when he discovered girls, and when he picked it up again, found that the years had only seasoned his talent. That was more than 30 years ago.  Today he is an award-winning carver having received honors on numerous occasions. He can be contacted at lancerath@yahoo.com.

The class subject is an interpretation of a carving project that first appeared in the Spring 2009 issue of Woodcarving Illustrated, authored by Doug Brooks.  Originally intended as a power carved subject, it has been modified to be carved exclusively with hand tools.  Class duration is 3 to 4 days costing $100 which includes the roughout, cast feet, and magnets. We will also paint the subject in acrylics, which will be supplied by the instructor.

Tools – Carving knives and a small V-tool.  Paint brushes and a paper pallet.

In this five-day seminar Mon-Fri, Dale is teaching a 15” rainbow trout. Dale’s fusion
of realism with design removes his subject from their natural landscapes of the stream to the creative realm of the art studio.  His step by step processes will teach you how to take an ordinary block of wood and turn it into a striking and beautiful sculpture.  As a student you will enjoy classes filled with creativity and fellowship while creating your naturalistic fish sculptures.

Dale currently lives in Central Oregon, dedicating his time and talents to teaching others the art of fish carving. You will gain a new appreciation for your subject matter, in that you will never look at a fish in the same way you have in the past.
Dale is a gifted artist, winning several first-place awards at the World Fish Carving Championships, Canadian Fish Carving Championships, and the Columbia Flyway Show.  He’s currently a charter member and founding board member of the National Fish Carvers Guild, dedicated to promoting the art of fish carving.

The seminar cost is $150 blank/material cost is $25 and includes the blanks, paints, air brushes, sanding sticks, bases, burning tips (scales). Please bring dust collector, Foredom  power carver, micro power carver, burning unit, assorted burrs and dust mask. Dale may be contacted at: flyboy@bendcable.com or 541-804-0325.
